I recently purchased a 2014 R31 which has an electric stove and oven. The engine only has 30 hours. I do not recall this issue arising at the survey. Everything else on the 110 side works. I was just placed in the water in Arcadia, Michigan and have plans to cruise Lakes Michigan and Huron. Where do I go with this problem? What kind of person should I look for or what might I do this correct this? Thanks.

Are you on Shore, Generator or Inverter, when the breaker trips?

Circuit breaker at Stern would be ELCI trip (shore power.) The fact that it is only the stove causing the issue. First check wire connections at the breaker panel and if the connections are tight and clean then inspect connections at the stove. If all connections are good you may have an issue with the stove top. If you are going to have it serviced. I would find a service technician that is ABYC certified electrician to do the electrical troubleshooting. Good Luck.

Yep. And which breaker is tripping? The Main or the stove breaker?

As BB said too and look at the wire running from the panel to the stove. Is it in good condition, any cuts or anything that would cause this.

Better still, disconnect the wire on the stove side. Cap the hot wire or all the wires off. Does the breaker still trip? If not, I would look at the stove itself. If yes, there is some sort of wiring problem.

It is the main breaker at the stern which is tripping, turning everything off.

I'm on shore when it trips.

I have the same issue on my C28; when on shore power the stove / oven will trip the ELCI. Works perfectly on the generator. I haven’t looked into the issue yet I just use generator power when I need the stove, even if connected to shore power.

You may have the same issue as barling. The main breaker trip is the ELCI. When using the stove top there is a differential in amps between the (Hot) load and the ( neutral) which means the ELCI is seeing some current in the ground wire. This could be in the wiring to the stove a neutral ground connected, corrosion causing a path for neutral to ground or the hot wire making a small leak path to the ground. Isolating the issue to the stove causing the ELCI trip will make for an easy troubleshoot.

Using the generator may present a safety hazard at the marina or in an anchorage especially if people are in the water. The reason the generator doesn't drip the ELCI is because the electricity generated by the generator does not go thru the ELCI.

Brian you keep adding to my to do list! I’ll have to prioritize this issue since is a safety concern. Luckily we aren’t at a marina and we don’t have swimmers while cooking/running the generator. I’ll start by isolating and go from there. I’ll keep this thread updated and hopefully baring can as well.

I've pulled the stove and placed it with Max's of Traverse City, Michigan. I found with Sure Marine Service in Seattle they are willing to provide a schematic of the stove and sell any needed parts. Max's are going to work on it on 7/7. I've found Force 10 seems to have taken over this nich of small boat stoves. A neighbor electrical engineer and I removed the back of the stove to find nothing significant about the wiring, but more parts need to be removed, which he chose not to do. If this does not work, I'll have to research replacing the unit, maybe with propane(?).

Hi Barling,

How are you making out with your stove?

I just noticed something odd - if the AC compressor is on at the same time as the stove or hot water heater, I get the reverse polarity light. I’m wondering if that’s a possible loose connection or something else. No reverse polarity unless compressor is on at the same time as others.

Thanks!
