Subject: Stowage for fishing rods on 2019 R29 CB NW Edition

Now that I'm invested in fishing gear (especially fishing rods that I have two of) I've spent time investigating where and how to stow them onboard with a mind on security from theft if stowed outside of the locked cabin.

Rods are lengthly so this presented a challenge. However, my rods can be disassembled into two lengths and this lead me to a solution that I'm happy with.

I wanted a solution that allows me to leave the rod reels assembled and left attached to the rod when stowing the rods. Removing the reels and line (each time I wished to stow the rods) was considered by me to be a PITA. My solution allows me to leave the reels attached to the rods. The rod holder for the narrow ends has a rotatable inner sliding piece that simplifies snapping the narrow rod ends securely once the rod handles have been slid into the other end holders first.

The height for this rod stowage is sufficient unless one was to be 6-1/2 feet tall. 😀

I also wanted a fish cleaning tray that could be mounted outside of the cockpit area to avoid any spillage from landing up in the cockpit. For this I invested in a SeaDog 30" tray that I mounted securely on the swim step railing.

I present my solutions here.... https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B1AGCATCnGC8Ix4

I can easily stow my fish net securely under the solar panel as it really is to large (that is the net portion) to place in cabin, although that could be done on a temporary basis I suppose.

Nice job Mr. Berry but where are you keeping all the fish until you get back to port for offloading ?
Looks like swim platform is full of crab pots, just kidding good luck on the fishing and have fun.

Bob: Don't I wish I had fish for offloading. Have not caught a single Salmon on my last 5 outings. 🙁

The crab pot really does not stop me from having a cooler box on the swim step. I've measured the space and will get a cooler box that fits nicely.

In my Puget Sound area we can fish 50 weeks of the year keeping an eye open for which areas are closed or open. This is great for me as that will mean I can enjoy many days fishing and make good on my fishing gear investments. 😀

My Wire Hair Fox Terrier (Jake) loves the fishing gig.... plenty of fishy smells to sniff at and so pleased to be with me vs. being left at home. When jigging/mooching we both hang out on the transom flip seat, enjoy each other's company and get plenty of sea air that tires both of us out which is ideal for sleeping comforts later on. 😀

Barry, now is the time to start catching. Pink salmon are in and are very easy to catch provided you find the school. They sell a package of small plain white flashers with a small pink hoochie that are absolute killers. Fishings good at Shipwreck north of Edmonds and Humpy Hollow on the east side of Whidbey Island in Possession sound.

Drop down 40 feet on the downrigger to start and soon it will be "fish on" for easy limits. Great for beginner fisherman and kids.

They're not the best tasting salmon but smoke up great. Good luck!

Peter

Peter: Thanks.... strange.... my dock buddy who has a very lengthy fishing career told me the exact same thing today. I will have my Volvo engine D4 Low Speed feature installed this coming Friday and then I'll be all set to troll with my down rigger at speeds down to 1.5 kts. Trying to troll with the down rigger without the Low Speed means at times the boat moves at 4 kts and then the line gripper lets go due to the excessive drag of the flasher and bait line. In the meantime I've been jigging and mooching while allowing the boat to drift with engine off.

Baz, I have a set of these rod holders mounted to the roof rack with zip ties. The rods hang under the rack.

Not as secure as your solution, but has worked so far....

Baz,
What make/model rods n reels are they?
Who makes the rod mount you're using?
Thanks,

(I've been known to copycat...)

My two rods are identical - UGLY STIK TIGER® Casting rod (paid $70 for each of them) -> http://www.uglystik.com/uglystik-rods-casting-rods/ugly-stik-tiger-casting-rod/1405371.html

My two rod reels are different; one is Regular reel used with the down rigger and the other is a PENN with foot counter that cost ~$90 (I really like the foot-counter as I can precisely target the fish per the Sonar's fish finder's depth readouts). I have original packaging on the boat so will obtain exact reel details later today and post back here with an EDIT.

The fancy looking and well designed rod holders were purchased from West Marine online ->

I use fresh water to lightly douse the rods and reels at end of day to keep them in good condition and for removing as much salt water from the reel mechanisms.

I made up a 3-foot 1/2 dowel rod with a brass open hook inserted into its end. I use this to retrieve the down rigger's gripper line as it dangles out some 3 feet from the side of the boat. Avoids me having to lean too far over the gunwale when wanting to place my line into the gripper. With a rocking/rolling boat one needs all the help you can muster, right ?

Thanks! I have a match pair of bait cast style saltwater poles n reels W/counters I don't think I paid $100 for both. I'll stick with them, I'm not that good at catching fish anyway. I made my own bait board following Seadog's design.
I have too much stuff in the cave, I need to move things around. This rod system looks good, I'll be ordering the holders.
Keep feeding ideas to spend my money on!
