I am changing oil and filter on my engine but the plastic lid on the oil filter canister (with the 1 7/16 hex head) is stuck and I cannot loosen it. Have the right sized socket and even used a breaker bar with no success.

Any suggestions on how to remove this cap without causing damage?
Thanks
Brian

Holy Crap! It must have been over torqued when it was last changed. I don’t know what else you can do to loosen it. I would have the boat on land in case something breaks. That way you are not in a worse predicament by having it in the water. If things go South you should be able to get BMW parts for replacement. Let us know how it works out.

Hi Brian,

Sounds like someone over-torqued it on the last change. BMW makes a wrench for those caps, but it sounds like you already have the right tools.

Good luck getting it off!

Heat might do the trick but also try an overnight soak with Marvel Mystery Oil. I've freed frozen engine pistons with this stuff.

Maybe a hair dryer on the attachment point to expand the metal and the correct socket (mm not inches) apply pressure and have someone else tap the breaker bar while applying pressure to shock it loose. Just a thought...

I like the hair dryer idea. Just a little heat on the lower metal part. I would also use the correct size metric socket with an extension to bring your ratchet or breaker bar handle above the engine. This will give you better turning leverage. Perhaps a few taps with a hammer on the breaker bar handle may help. The vibration sometimes helps loosening. Be careful. That cap is just hard plastic.
