Stuck oil filter canister cap on Yanmar 4BY2 engine

Folks-
I am having a heck of a time removing the oil filter unit plastic cap. I have a 1 7/16 in socket and have tried a breaker bar without success. The top has not been off in about 18 mo and I know that I tightened it with a torque wrench as indicated on the cap.

Any suggestions on what I can do to break apart what appears to be a "weld" between the plastic cap and the metal filter canister?

Mr. Brian. You may have to take the whole filter assembly off and take it to where you can place it in a vice and get better leverage for removal of the cap! I would order and have on hand a replacement cap, O-ring and gasket for reassembly. Most likely you are going to damage the cap getting it off. The oil filter assembly should only have 4 bolts holding it to the engine, and about 2 bolts holding the oil cooler assembly on and remove the oil sensing unit. It's a lot easier to work on something when your not cramped on the boat and tools are available at a arms length. I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but is my advice! Before I removed the assembly I would make sure you had the right socket. It should be metric, but perhaps your SAE fits fine. I would then use an extension to bring your breaker bar up above the engine. This will give you better ability for leverage and you could even extend your breaker bar handle with a pipe. If you can't get it off by turning counterclockwise, sometimes a slight tightening releases the unintended seal and then going counterclockwise it will release and turn. This cap is a hard plastic so be gentle. Sometimes a few short jerks works as well. A few hits with a hammer on the breaker bar handle can help as well. Let us know how it goes.
