Sudden loss of fordward & reverse--

Any thoughts on why my Ranger's throttle went powerless ? Is it a cable or fluid leak that stopped the change or gears? I was waiting on a bridge opening and gently put it in reverse and forward and it stopped changing gears and it stayed in reverse.... I had to shut down the motor and it would not start because it stated I was not in neutral .

Are you a diesel inboard or gas outboard? Which engine do you have?
