Ronnie:
When we had the pleasure of meeting you yesterday, you stated the factory could install a two-part secondary outboard motor mount. A post reply on the Technical Issue Site, indicated a current owner had opted for the installation. Since the intent is to use the mount only in a "get home" emergency mode, the two-part design would be highly desirable in order to achieve minimum obstructions during normal operations. I have been unable to find such an item on the internet. Could you please provide what source the factory uses to provide the option?

Try Weaver Industries in Idaho...I think. That's where I got my removable transom.

Since you stated the source used to provide your swim step outboard motor mount, can I assume yours is used to provide a modest "get home engine" capability? I've posted on the Technical site, hoping to get feedback on any actual experience with the capability, but so far the best I've done is to hear from an owner who installed the mount, but no information regarding how well it works. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it, but confirmation from an actual user would be nice.

If you give me an email address, I'll send a picture of my long shaft Honda 5 hp mounted on the swim platform. The best I can get on my R-27 is about 3 or 4 knots. A 9 1/2 horse would work well. I use a tiller extension so that I can steer from the cockpit.

PhilR:

Thanks for the response.

I would appreciate the picture. My email address kurtnterrie@yahoo.com.

I intend to use a 5 HP on our Cutwater 28. An engine rep recommended going to a power prop vice the standard one. That's what they do for sailboat installations where the motor represents an auxiliary engine rather than an emergency one.

Does this application dictate the long shaft or does your dinghy require it?

Emailed pictures. The long shaft was necessary...with a strong wind astern, the lifting of the swim platform by the wave motion will bring the prop to the surface. You may want to rotate the picture of the transom 90 deg to see it better. Weaver makes this unit for motor storage on the swim platform. Mine is a reinforced version to function as a useable motor mount. I've only used it a few times. Once when a coolant hose split open....15 miles back to the dock with a 30 mph wind astern. Took about 3 hrs, but sure beat paddleing.
