The tall ships are on the Saginaw River at Bay City this weekend... We went for a cruise through the flotilla surrounding the ships last evening... A very busy river... There were by my count 12 tall ships in two rows covering both sides of the river... When looking through the forest of masts and yards it was easy to visualize how the harbors of the 1700's - 1800's must have looked when the fleet was in...
The river was bedlam with everything from million dollar floating condos, 2000 hp cigarette phallic symbols complete with the obligatory blond bimbo on the foredeck, Bayliners, to kayaks - all churning around on a half mile of river front... There was security everywhere on the river, USCG, sheriff's department, homeland security, and city police on the docks... We moored at a venerable river restaurant that dates back to the days of the timber barons to have supper... At the next table was the crew off a USCG boat that was mixed coasties and DHS agents (the latter were all dolled up in tactical gear, bullet proof vests, laced up paratrooper boots, sidearms, dark glasses, etc...) To my old eyes they looked pretty callow and way too much testosterone to be running around with all the firepower - must be my age showing..
I will post a couple of pictures in my photo album... I don't have my normal editing software so they are going to be large file sizes, sorry bout that...
