Went to see the Tall Ships today at Bay City. It was too hot on the river (91f) and no wind so we made one pass up and back on the double line of ships.
Then we ran down river and out onto Saginaw Bay. Nice breeze and cooler. Went out to the end of the ship channel and back . Four hours on the tach. we have been farming since we came back from Florida in March. It felt good to get some boat time in.

Denny,

The Tall Ships are wonderful. I hope you get to do a Sail-Away on one of them. The Tall Ship "Lynx" was stationed in Ft. Myers Beach at Nervous Nellies at the foot of the bridge to Estero Island for a couple of months this past winter. We were able to go on a 2 hour Sail-Away 3 times while it was in Ft. Myers Beach. Guests are allowed to assist with handling the sailing lines. A couple of times we were in the Gulf with our R27 circling the "Lynx" and taking pictures. What a great experience!

Sorry about the delay in responding, guys: It's been crazy and I'm about to walk out the door a cross a couple of states gathering up grandchildren for a weekend at our daughter's lake house.
I'm getting hourly phone calls from the contractor who is putting up a new tool shed for the farm business - baby sitting a 3 year old in an adult body is tiring.
And a coon has been slaughtering our chickens, he got three in the past three days. But he came to a bad end a couple of hours ago in the misty light of dawn.

Jim and Lisa. You are ON my friends. This time I will try real hard not to let other people jerk me around and miss a cruise like happened with ROAM last summer.
Do you know if the Michigan enhanced drivers license will do for border crossings in a boat - it does in the car. We don't have pass ports but will get them if needed. (yeah, we are a bunch of stay-at-homes)

Dale, yes! sailing on a tall ship is an experience. We have been out on the Appledore IV twice now (schooner). And last winter we followed the Appledore V into the inlet at Venice. I'm much better at watching lithe young ladies haul the lines than I am at helping

The Tall Ships Festival is one of those maritime treasures.
We worked in security in 2005 and 2008 when they were hosted in Tacoma, Washington. In 2008 I was the main patrol coordinator. Patrol boats were all sizes and makes, but we did have one Ranger 25. It got as much attention as some of the tall ships.
Unfortunately we didn't have the Tall Ships in 2011 due to funding problems in the city.Hopfully we can get them in 2014.

For those who may not know the Tall Ships visit the East Coast, the next year, the Great Lakes ala your posting, then the next year on the West Coast on a rotational basis.

So if they are in your neighborhood and you want to get involved or just see them, it is boat-time well spent.

P.C. Jim

We saw two tall ships by Cypress Island today when we were returning from Friday Harbor, beautiful.
