Has anyone installed a tankless hot water system in their Tug?

You may want to read the latest news in Seaworthy, a Boat Us mag. They suggest against it and go on to recommend only installing a marine-rated tank type water heater. On the other hand, many of my Australian friends have tankless heaters on their boats.

You will need 240 volts and lots of it to run a tankless heater that is capable of heating any reasonable amount of water. The 120 volt units they sell at the box stores are completely inadequate for even washing your hands.

Check out precision temp water heaters...fantastic!
I installed one in my 1973 gmc mh and loved it. 12v and hot hot water now!

Many commercial fishing boats use them. If you already have propane stove and/or oven, it should be a pretty easy install. The propane is likely the bigger hassle. One negative is that you lose the convenience of a conventional water heater that utilizes engine heat when it's running. Unless of course you don't already have that or you keep it as well as the on-demand heater...

Thanks Dan , yes I look at Precision online, you need very little power to run. I find after sitting moored some where with no generator the engine needs to run about 25 minutes to warm up the water hot enough for a shower. They need no pilot light also which makes it safe under way . I just was wondering why no one has installed one.

I had a propane one from a company named "Paloma" on a sailboat many moons ago. Don't know if they are still in business. Worked well - had no problems with it at all.

Ordered the Precision Temp M550 tankless hot water system. I will let everyone know how it works out.

I had a tankless Excel propane heater on the sailboat I just sold to buy an R-29. Used 2 size D batteries and propane to produce truly endless hot water. It also heated whatever area it was installed in - lots of heat in the utility area.
