We have an R-31 with a fair amount of teak in the cabin and main stateroom. We would like to freshen it with a new coat of oil (Daley’s SeaFin Teak Oil has been our go-to product for previous projects). My question is regarding the teak in the galley area near the stove, which may have collected a coating of grease from various cooking projects over the last three years or so.

Should I use acetone to wipe it down first…or will that just drive any grease/oils deeper into the wood? Soap and water? There are products for cleaning teak before oiling but the directions say to hose it down after applying. That’s not really practical in the interior cabin around the stove and cabinets.

If you are familiar with a product or have experience with this I would appreciate some input. Thanks!

I am no expert - When I re-varnished the exterior teak on a previous boat, step 1 was to wash the varnish with a TSP/Water solution prior to sanding and varnish. The amount of dirt that was removed was impressive.

Exterior has more typical dirty grime than an interior area will, obviously.

I hope that helps.

They cover teak maintenance in the “Spring Maintenance” as the prop turns webinar. I think it was a two par webinar by RT.

There are two types of teak in the interior and they get treated differently.

Hi John,

I would try vinegar and hot water first before going more aggressive. Any thing that cuts grease should work. Let the surface dry well before and between coats.

Appreciate the responses! And thank you Curt for suggesting vinegar and hot water. That seems like a practical approach that is workable inside the cabin, though it hadn’t occurred to me. It seems likely to do what I need without creating more problems.
