I am in the process of buying a R29 which has an electric marine toilet. This is a big plus for us from the manual head on our 25 and I would like to know if it uses fresh water or sea water. Secondly does anyone know how much water it uses per flush? A friend of mine who has the vacu flush says that electric toilets use a lot of water and tend to fill up the holding tank fast. 🙂

The head on the R-29 draws seawater for flushing. I cannot give you the exact amount of water it uses on each flush however I can tell you, Maureen and I have gone five days and have yet to fill the tank. We use the head on board exclusively.

We have had but one issue with odor using seawater to flush. This I believe was due to the fact that I may have forgotten to add chemical after pumping the tank.

Bridget and I have No problem with our head on our R-29. We use it a lot with no issue. It does not fill up fast and we do use sea water.
It is important to add chemical to the tank. It is also good to pump out at a pump out station every so often and give a good flush with fresh water. We mostly pump overboard where it is legal.
When we do our flush outs at a pump out station I fill the tank three times with fresh water and then pump it out.
It is also good to flush with vinegar every few months. How we do that is, if you are in the water then you need to close your sea cock. Then open your sea strainer and have someone flush the toilet while you are keeping the sea strainer full of vinegar. Flush the whole gallon through. What this does is clean the lines. It will also clean your tank. If you are able to pump overboard then it will clean your macerator pump and lines also. It is ok to leave it in your tank till you can pump over.
Remember to reopen your sea cock when you are done.
Some people also complain that there is a smell outside there boat when they flush there head. The way to keep this from happening is, Keep chemical in the tank and we also have installed a vent filter. It is full of charcoal and will eliminate the odor coming out the vent. We use one called Big Orange. I like that one because you can replace the charcoal yourself once a year. Others you need to buy a whole new filter at around a $100.00.
I get replacement charcoal from the fish supply section at walmart. It is the same charcoal they use for the aquarium filters.
Here is a link on big orange.....http://www.bigorangefilter.com/

There has been much talk about head odor on tugnuts over the last few months and the solution is simple and cheep.
Like everything else on our boats, It just requires maintenance. It is not that hard if one keeps up with it.

Chemical,Vent filter, and vinegar every so often 😉 Awww like a breath of spring!

I use Thetford Aqua Kem in the 32 oz. bottle. It is the best. After each pump out I add the required amount to the head and flush enough for it to get it into the holding tank. It keeps the smell out even in 100+ degree temperatures. During pump out I will always refill the tank at least once with fresh water and pump out again.

Seawater in the salt-water intake for the head can also cause a smell in the bathroom when you flush because the little sea creatures/plants/algae in the water die once they are caught in the intake hose and decompose. If the boat has been sitting for a week or more I will pump the head enough for the water to be replaced in the intake hose before I let anyone use it. That first flush will smell but the proceeding flushes will not.

Vinegar treatments, as discussed above, will help make sure that calcium deposits (from human waste) do not occur in the hoses and it will allow waste to flow more freely. It is kind of like cholesterol causing arteries to block. It is a good idea from a maintenance perspective because changing the waste hose is not a fun, as I am sure you can imagine.

Oh, and I converted our R25 manual head to an electric. I couldn't take all the hand pumping. If anyone is interested I put together instructions. Private message me if you would like a copy.

Thanks very much! Your responses are very helpful and have put my mind at ease.
