After reading David and Maureen's wonderful earlier posts about using Karma as both office and condo in Seattle, I thought I would do the same, but with a twist.

Having a series of late afternoon and early evening business meetings in San Francisco, followed by a morning meeting the next day, I decided to use our R-27 as an office and hotel. For context, those of you who know the Bay Area know two unyielding realities: traffic is awful and the price of a hotel is even more awful.

So instead, I took Tugnacious down to Berkeley (60 miles) on its trailer, launched it at the Berkeley Marina ($15), glided across flat calm glassy waters to South Beach Harbor (next to ATT park, home of THE World Series Champs), paid $35 and set up my office. Walked to all my meetings, got work done in between, spent the night on the boat, went to morning meetings, and motored back across the Bay in perfect weather to my truck. I got there early enough to beat the traffic home. Total fuel used was 10 gallons on the truck and five gallons on the boat, about $60. $20 toll (four axles!). Total direct cost, not counting wear on the truck or boat, $130. One night's hotel in San Francisco, $220. Parking: $30. Tolls $10. Gas $25. Total cost: $285.

That's right, it is half the cost to drive and boat to work than it is to drive and it is 100 times more fun. I may be on to something here. Time to call my CPA.

I love it! That's business done right!!

And I suppose no matter how the day was during your office time you had a smile 🙂

Yes, yes. Yes I did. Beats working.

Sounds like a nice day at the office.

Now that was creative. My daughter lives in SF and she's very interested in the R-21... so I'll pass this creative meeting solution along to her as well. 😉 If she can figure it saves money then it could lessen the price bite of buying the R-21 along with a smile on her face. 😉 Knowing her, she would party on the boat in the evening with the sunset glowing.

Great idea. When you talk to your CPA he will throw in depreciation on the boat and truck and your $130.00 trip will be about $1,300!

Our new "office" Destiny, is working out great. While we loved and enjoyed Karma and Solitude, they had simply just become to small. The end of December will mark eight months that we have had Destiny. In that eight months, we will have spent over 180 nights aboard. At that rate, we will have in over 270 nights by the end of the first year.

We are always asking ourselves; "who would have thought 32 years ago when, after paying all of the bills, we would only have ten dollars left in our pockets. And now we lead this great life today (we did have our season passes to the ski resort so skiing EVERY afternoon was the norm then) and, we do all of this with our great friends through out the Tugnuts community!

Happy Holidays to all of you!
