Hi All - when I bought my boat (used) the remote for the Garmin Autopilot didn't work. The batteries had corroded the circuit board all the way through. I contacted Garmin and they said I could try eBay or replace the whole autopilot to get the new remote.

I found a novel solution and have been using it and really like it.

I have a Garmin 8610xsv chart plotter beside the original 7612. I bought the little Grid 20 controller for the new autopilot. The normal use case is to install it in the arm of a chair and control your plotter sitting back. I just put batteries in it and use it like an awkwardly shaped remote control. I put the combo screen up on the chart plotter that includes the Autopilot screen.

The Grid 20 has a tiny pointing joystick/rotating wheel to control where you are on the screen. If you put focus on the autopilot section of the screen it operates like a tiny little steering wheel. I can sit back, relax and use the world's tiniest steering wheel to control the boat. It sounds silly but I no longer have to hunch over the wheel or the chart plotter to use the autopilot. It was a huge comfort gamechanger. Shared for those of you who might have a similar problem.

The remote control for the autopilot is even better. Literally point and click.

Yeah. But it’s totally unavailable for the GHC 10. In a few years if I swap it out - I look forward to the ‘right’ tool.
