Hi all,

I found a bit of info searching the forum but still have some questions.

-I have 2010 R29 classic. Boat has x1 new starter battery, x4 relatively new house bank, and x1 thruster battery
-Prior to 2-week summer trip thruster batter was dead so just hooked up thrusters to starter battery. Worked fine for 2 weeks.
-Last week I used the thruster and it tripped all the house power!
-Not totally sure how I got the house back working, but I switched parallel switch few times as well as the 2 house breakers...and finally got house back on

So now to my questions:

Q1 - Why is this happening? And what is the actual method to turn house back on if it happens?

Q2 - Do I need a dedicated thruster battery? I rarely use my thrusters - 30s when I leave the dock every few weeks. Seems a waste to have a dedicated battery for that with the cost and added weight. If I did omit the thruster battery is it better to have the thrusters hooked into starter or house bank? And obviously I'd have to do it in a different manner as I am presently doing?

Thanks!!

Replace your thruster battery.

I have a 2017 RT25SC. The wiring may well be different but the logic should be similar. I have one engine starter battery. It’s an Optima and not intended for deep cycling but great for starting. I never want to hook it with any other battery like thrusters or house unless it’s dead for some reason and then the parallel switch gives access to the house batteries. The thruster battery is a deep cycle and also feeds the windlass. These are both high draw items that I normally don’t want to drain my house batteries. When, however, I am anchored out, I have normally been running for a while and all batteries are at 100%. I have now installed a separate rotary switch and can parallel my thruster battery to add to house capacity. Some people have done this as a permanent connection but I prefer to have the ability to disconnect. The ACR’s will ensure all batteries get charged when you’re underway.
