Subject: Tired of hearing alarm sound when engine stopped on R-21EC

On my 2016 R-21EC the engine control panel has 4 buttons.

  • On/Off
    Start
    Alarm dim
    Stop

To start the engine I press the On/Off then press the Start.

To stop the engine I press Stop and then a few seconds later the screeching alarm sounds and pressing the on/off button stops the alarm sound.

I've played some with the sequence of pressing the buttons when wanting to stop the engine but every time the alarm sound persists.

I also note that sometimes when I press the on/off button and then the Start button the alarm may at times sound for a split second.

Am I doing something wrong here or is the annoying alarm sound something I have to live with ? 🙁

Engine is the Volvo Penta D30.

Well our 21 isn't in the water quite yet, but my memory tells me that after hitting the on/off button, which energizes the tach, you wait to hear two loud beeps, you then hit the start button. When shutting the engine off, after hitting the stop button, if you don't hit the on/off button, you will hear an alarm. My thinking was that the two beeps tells you the preheat is done (start) and the alarm after stopping the engine, if you don't then hit the off/on button, tells you the tach and starting system is still energized and you may want to stop the battery drain. It may simply be that there is a right way, a wrong way and the Volvo way.

I've tried the press Stop and then almost immediately press the on/off button but the darn alarm still sounds a few seconds later.

Yes, I understand the alarm beep after press the on/off button and then the Start button is an indication the glow plugs have heated (if indeed they are required these days) and maybe the oil pressure is built up sufficiently.

The same alarm beep was evident on my R-25 with the Yanmar engine when starting it. In fact if you listened carefully you hear a slight whine as the oil pump did its work. 😉

My engine is relatively new and I notice when it's started a small brief puff of blueish smoke is seen from the exhaust ! Is this normal ?

I am almost positive that after stopping the engine, if I push the on/off button (confirm the tach goes off) that there will be no alarm. No, never noticed anything odd with the exhaust.

Being hard of hearing, I don't recall ever hearing the two beeps. But, I can hear the engine alarm! I like alarms, not the loud sound per se, but acknowledging the fact I'm following recommended starting/stopping procedures. Definitely beats warning lights.

I haven't noticed any exhaust smoke. My engine is new, just over 40 hours. Changed the oil and filter last week, I think.

I would bet that the engine's piston rings are not quite seated yet hence some blue smoke from oil getting past the piston rings.

Ha! Now that’s funny. So glad we Canadians are ‘tethered’ to England and that whole Sheet Show.

After chatting with Andrew about this there's no way to shut off the alarm after pressing Stop to stop the engine. The alarm will sound to indicate power is still going to the Tach and hours used display and Fuel gauge. The on/off button has to be pressed to shut off the power and the alarm sound is an indication that engine is stopped but power still on. So if nothing else the alarm sound is a sanity check for telling you the alarm mechanism IS working.
