Took a pounding, what to check

I made the rookie mistake of checking the wind wave forecast but not updating as conditions changed. As a result we took quite a pounding in the straight of Juan de fuca. Tug handled the big water (for us anyway) but we were rocking! What should I check after heavy seas to be sure nothing broke?

Well you could all go to an Urgent Care facility and have yourselves checked out!
Seriously, the boat will handle a lot more than you can. By big waves I assume you were getting blue water over the top of the cabin. Less than that and it’s just annoying and uncomfortable.
Just to be in the safe side, just check all the electrical equipment for proper function and do a visual check of all that is readily accessible. Common things that have been known to break loose after big waves include the fresh water pump(s) and bilge pumps.

Hah! Your right—tug did a lot better than the crew! No urgent care but almost needed a new pair of shorts! Will check those. I saw a Facebook post earlier today about someone’s bilge pump breaking loose so I thought I’d ask.

Depending on the age of the tug, if diesel I’d potentially check/change the fuel filter. If there is crud in the tank that has settled and stayed there over a long period of calm cruising, a good fuel tank stirring like that could have hit your filter with deposits/bioslime harder than usual.
