I've started to see an anomaly associated with charging our Torqeedo motor's battery.

Typically, when charging the battery via the supplied charger the LED will blink until the battery reaches 100% at which point it stays lit. However, lately (maybe over past year now) I've noticed that when the battery is fully charged and I remove the charger connection from the battery the LED will start blinking again. This confuses me. So I attach the tiller arm to get a battery charge level readout and it display 100%.

If I leave the battery without the charger attached over night I find the LED is still blinking. 😱

Just to be sure I reattach the charger briefly and then disconnect it and the lED stops blinking.

Very weird IMO.

I called Torqeedo service Dept the other day and discussed this. I was told that the software in the battery probably has a bug and would need to be updated. My battery is over 3 years old and is out of warranty, so if I wanted I had two options

1) Send battery to Torqeedo to have the software updated
2) Replace the battery with a newer model

I told Torqeedo service that I can stop the LED blinking issue if I reconnected the charger for a very brief period and then disconnect it. They said, so long as I could do this then any battery drain due to the blinking LED should be eliminated and not to worry.

I asked about battery life as part of the discussion and was told under normal use I should be able to get 6 years with the battery. At this point the battery could be down to around 75% of its new condition. Torqeedo has not had the batteries out in the market for long enough to be more precise and that this 6 year statement is what the battery cell manufacturer Sony tells them. Keeping the battery well maintained should provide an extended life of around 8 years maybe.

A new battery will cost $699, and is one that has a greater battery charge life (not sure about the terminology here).

I asked about recycling the old battery when the time came to replace it. They had no real good answer but did say, when that time arrived to give them a call and they would assist with the recycling.

So, it seems all is AOK so long as my simple method for stopping the LED from blinking after a full charge continues to work.

I have no idea to what extent the blinking LED would deplete the battery charge more quickly than if the LED was 'blank' (not lit).

I asked Torqeedo if they had other customers with a similar issue and was told, yes they had but very few.

Torqeedo was convinced the issue is software related.

Have others with the Torqeedo motor/battery observed this blinking LED issue I wonder ?
