Looking to see if people feel that a 4 wheel drive pick up truck (diesel 1 ton or 3/4) dually is a lot better for towing compared to a standard 4 wheel drive.
This would be for towing a 29' Ranger.

Thanks,
Matt Murphy

I use a dully 1 ton to pull my R-21, but only because I have it for a goose neck horse trailer.
Since your using a bumper pull you don't need the extra weight capacity the dually has, though they will love you at the tire store! Check the tongue weight of your trailer and you'll see that a regular truck with four tires, 4X4, and a heavy duty hitch system should be fine. Just my thoughts Bob

Matt:

I tow Tingira (R-29S) with a 2017 Ram 2500 Diesel 4x4 single tire rear. The truck handles the weight with ZERO problems; in fact, the weight on the rear causes no squat.

For me, I don't see a need for a dually.

Hi Matt, I would recommend a 3/4 or 1 ton single axle 4x4 diesel to tow your R29. I know most of the boat ramps we use we need the four wheel drive to pull our R27 out because of the slime at low tide. I tow with a Ford F-250 diesel 4x4 without any issues.

Is a dually better for towing a large boat like an R29? Yes. Is it required? No, as long as all truck components are up to the task of pulling and, most importantly, stopping the weight carried.

I have one ton diesel with extended cab and eight foot bed. If I were to do it again I would go with 3/4 ton for a little better ride, crew cab and a shorter bed.

We tow our R29S with a GMC 3/4 4x4 deisel, single rear wheel axle, without any issues. It was the truck we had for towing our R27 and I was reluctant about towing the R29 but after we pulled out of Seattle for a cross country trip in all sorts of conditions and terrain we felt confident in the 3/4 doing the job.

We just purchased a Ford F-350, extended cab with 8’ bed to pull our Cutwater 30 S. We opted for a vehicle with a V 10 over a diesel for initial cast as well as reliability. Late model V 10s are typically 30% less than similar used diesel vehicles and often have a lot less miles on them.

We went into the purchase knowing that the mileage towing the boat will be in the 6-8 mpg range but if you do the math you can buy a lot of extra fuel for the lower aquisition and maintaince costs of the big gas V10.

I will keep Tugnuts members apprised as we get more mikes on the tow vehicle.
