Subject: Transfer old MMSI or create a new MMSI for new boat

My previous boat was a Ranger Tug R-25 (Classic). I had this boat Documented and also had an Ship Station radio license assigned. The MMSI for this R-25 was issued directly by FCC in conjunction with a Ship Station License. This R-25 has been sold and I've notified FCC and USCG Document folks about this sale.

I'm now wanting to assign a MMSI to my new Ranger Tug R-21EC.

I thought about transferring the old MMSI for the R-25 to the new R-21EC. However, MMSI@BoatUS.com is giving me all sorts of grief.

So I'm of the opinion it will simply be so much easier to have a new MMSI assigned for the R-21EC. Using this MMSI I can configure the R-21EC's VHF radio with all the needed data to allow USCG to identify me and my new R-21EC in case of emergency when on the water.

What do others think ? Thanks.... 🙂

It is my understanding that the MMSI number stays with the boat. The new owner of you R25 gets your old number. You get a new one.

Curt is correct - the MMSI is linked to the boat. You may be able to have your old MMSI reassigned to new vessel, but likely easier (and free) to get a new MMSI assigned.

Just my two cents worth.

The MMSI can be transferred but takes more co-ordination between previous and current boat owners.... plus in my case I have to go through FCC because of the Station radio license.

I will obtain a new MMSI for my new R-21EC.... I think this is best.
