Transferring boat's name from one boat to another

So, having sold our R-25 named Laxey I'm wondering what is entailed in keeping the name for a future boat, assuming the new owners of the R-25 wish to rename the boat ?

I've search the WA website but so far have not found any information about the rules governing the transfer of a boat's name from one boat to another.

Anyone know how this can be done ?

Our Laxey was Documented, and the National Vessel Documentation Center informed me that all I need do is to write across the back of the Certificate of Documentation /SOLD/ and mail it to them. However, this has nothing to do with the transfer of the boat's name.

I asked this question of the person who was handling the title and documentation of our new Cutwater 28 (Callie VanNess of VanNess Vessel Title and Closing Services) because we wanted to name our new boat the same as the old boat. She said there was no reason why we couldn't keep the same name for our new boat even if the buyer of our old boat kept the same name. She submitted the paperwork for documenting the new boat using the same name and we just recently received the notification from the Coast Guard that the boat was documented. We haven't received the Certificate of Documentation yet since the Coast Guard is backlogged several months in sending out the Certificate.

Names are not exclusive with the Coast Guard Documentation. If you go on their site and do a search you will see how many boats have the same name. If you want to change the name of a documented boat then there is paperwork involved and perhaps a fee, but that I am not sure about.

And then there is the whole superstition/christening thing. Greeks and Romans christened their boats when they named them, with the goal of asking Poseidon and Neptune, respectively, to protect and/or spare the named vessel. I often wonder if these gods get confused when they run into a boat named Serendipity or Serenity or Happy Ours or....

To avoid confusing the gods we chose what we thought was a unique name--Tugnacious--only to discover after the fact that there is a Nordic Tug and a Lord Nelson Victory Tug named Tugnacious. Grrrrr. But ours is better looking, so I am sure the gods know us.

This is a long winded 4th of July way of saying: name the boat whatever you want! No one, including the law, cares.
