transmission fluid level dipstick screwed in or not

When checking the fluid level in the transmission for the yanmar 110 ( don't have the tranny type on me at the moment) does the screw need to be screwed on or just sitting on top to check it? Seems like it would not make much difference which way. Don't think it's that critical to get the fluid exact. Heard both ways.

To check the level, I have always just placed it in without screwing it in.
