Could anyone tell us the brand of oil they found for the Transmission. Our Cummins 130 manual asks for API Class CD SAE 20 or CD SAE 30 engine oil. (I really don't want to give my local Cummins dealer any more of my money, given the $128 they charged me for an engine zinc assembly!!)

Hi Sparky,

I just changed Kolo Iki's transmission oil this weekend with Chevron Delo 400 SAE 30 with an API classification of CF/SL. I paid $5.00 something for a quart, which allows for two oil changes on the Yanmar 30hp 😀

Aloha,

Rick

Sparky,
I have the Cummins 150hp, should be similar transmission specs. Before me, I have a quart of what the Cummins dealer in Vallejo, CA, used to refresh the entire transmission oil. "Volvo Penta Full Synthetic Gasoline Engine Oil, SAE 30" In other words, relatively standard gasoline engine oil with 30 weight, but, of course, the synthetic version.
Frankly, it appears that the transmission oil is just SAE 30 engine oil. It stays nice and clean. Have you figured out how to check your transmission filter. It's easy, and tells you if your transmission is grinding up any gears.

Didn't know there was a filter? So my answer would be "no, duh where is it?" I was concerned on the oil as the manual says Class "CD" and I can't find it anywhere.

Hi Sparky,

Don't worry about trying to find a straight 30 weight CD oil. That is the minimum acceptable classification and most quality oils today will have a higher classification. Hence an oil rated CF will meet or exceed the standards of a CD rated oil. I thought that was the case and the mechanic who taught my Diesel in a Day course last weekend confirmed it.

The Chevron Delo oil I mentioned in my previous post will work just fine and it is readily available.

Regards,

Rick

Sparky,
Of course, I am assuming that the 130 hp Cummins is basically the same engine as the 150 hp, or, as they call it, the QSD 2.0. In my case, the transmission filter is a permanent screen which is, get this, shaped like a Cuban cigar.
that is, it is cylindrical and long, and there is a wing nut on the side of the transmission, which you gently loosen, and then pull the cylindrical screen out. Read it and weep ( I hope not ).
In the bag of manuals for the composite parts of your Ranger Tug, you should have a Manual for your Cummins. In mine, it shows an actual photograph of the transmission, with the wing nut for the filter highlighted. Check it out.
