I’ll admit this is small potatoes in the big scheme of things, and I guess this is to be expected when you own a boat, but I’m annoyed nonetheless. Thought I’d share.

Has anyone else had the plastic fitting that connects the shower head to the back of the transom shower fixture break?

Last fall, shortly after the boat was winterized by a very well-known contractor based at my marina with three other locations on the Chesapeake, I was told that the fitting “failed” and they offered to fix it for $750. I declined the repair.

I finally had a chance to check it out yesterday. Not only was the fitting snapped off but they had rendered a temporary repair by connecting the hot and cold supply lines to each other. I had not been informed of this. I’d been wondering why I was only getting lukewarm water from the sinks and head shower. Am I correct in assuming that having the cold supply line flowing directly into the hot could be the cause?

What makes this interesting is that since we bought our C30 new two and a half years ago, we had used that shower exactly once. The only people who have accessed that area under the transom seat would have been the technician who winterized the generator. I found an exact replacement on Amazon for the entire shower assembly for $47. Four screws and a little caulk and it’ll be done.

I contacted the contractor and politely informed him of the situation. His response? “Things break on boats. We fix them.” He denied any wrongdoing for either the break or the outrageous $750 quote.

Guess I won’t be using him again. :?

When winterizing you need to be sure to run the antifreeze through the shower head as well as all faucets. I just throw my shower head in the sink and run both the faucet and shower until I see dark pink. In the RT-25 Classic we can do a full winterization in about 2 hours. RT has a great video on what to do and how to do it. It’s one of the easier owner DIY maintenance projects.

thats why they are called CONtractors, some of them are real con artist.

The failure happened at the end of the season, before the first freeze. I replaced the shower assembly today. When I took out the old one, antifreeze came out...it was properly winterized - freezing was not the cause. Also, my guess that connecting the hot and cold lines together was the reason I could only get lukewarm out of the hot proved to be correct. We now have all the hot water we need.
