Hi all,

Haven't been able to find recent information about installing a trolling motor bracket and/or recommendations of a good small trolling engine to be used on my Ranger R21EC... has anyone had recent experience with the installation, location on the transom, bracket manufacturer, and type of engine, long shaft, etc.?

Thank you so much.
Keith

I removed the swim platform and installed an adjustable motor mount right in middle of stern, I had a 4 horse yamaha from a previous boat and that is what I will use. Not hard just have to move fuel tank to get to inner stern.

I bought a spring-loaded motor mount and had it installed to the right of the swim platform as you look at the boat from behind.

Then I acquired a good used, 5-hp Suzuki longshaft. I was advised by Andrew that you must get a longshaft, not a shortshaft, for a trolling motor to work properly on an R-21 EC. However, I know there are at least two other owners of that boat who use a short shaft trolling motor with no apparent problem.

By the way, I traded two used sea kayaks for the trolling motor with a marine dealer in Shelton, Washington. So there may be ways you can get a good, used motor besides shelling out some serious coin.

Dumb question here…
Why get a trolling motor?
Won’t the 30hp diesel at low rpm’s provide the same?

The answer to your question is yes and no, the 30 hp motor will push the boat at about 3 mph at 900 rpm' s which is idle. To lower the speed you will need a kicker. Some species like lake trout require a slower trowling speed, I use a 6 hp kicker for fishing at slow speed, for salmon I just use the main.
Pictures of my set up are in my photo album . Bob
