When operating my R-27 in salt water, I usually flush the engine when at port putting a fresh water hose into the Sea Water filter, after removing the cover, and running the engine. I am having difficulty sealing the cover after the flush and have found heavy leakage around the edges of the cover when I go to use the boat again. This is a constant problem. Tightening the knob does not usually solve the problem. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

What I have done in the past if the seal on the multi strainer is not sealing. I grab the lid and spin it to get it to seal then tighten the knob. This seems to work really well.

The o ring is not seated properly. I agree with the PP, spin it around as you tighten it. But, why flush it out? I have been boating for 25 years and I never flushed out the engine in any of my boats. Seems a little excess? Just my opinion.

Oh boy, here we go. I can hardly wait for it to morph into a polemical discussion of which way the roll of TP should be installed

Always, over the top. There is nothing to discuss.

First of all, thanks for the replies. I will try rotating the cover while tightening. Next.....What do you guys mean by its installed over the top? For those who are fortunate enough to operate only in fresh water, like I do for 6 months a year, no need to flush. If you operate in salt water and do not flush, I am sure you will pay the piper one of the days. I plan to put a flush-out hose connection in as soon as I figure out the best way to do it. Then I won't have to loosen the filter cover.

Come on, share your secret. Those of us that believe flushing is a good thing would like to hear why putting in a port is a bad thing.

You have to be careful with having a direct connection. Remember, it is a wet exhaust. If you flush more water in than can exhaust it could back up into the exhaust valves when they are in an open position and then flood the cylinders and cause a hydro lock. It is safer to just open the strainer and close the seacock and let the hose run into the strainer. Any excess water will run Into the bilge and will either get pumped out if you are in the water or just run out if you are on the hard and removed the plug.
