Just found out that Ranger Tugs and Cutwaters are changing to the Volvo engines. A few years ago there were some issues with their customer service being spotty. Not sure if this is a good thing or not. I wonder if this will change any of the fuel burn numbers.

Don't know why they'd want to change...maybe Yanmar parts aren't expensive enough? 😉

Where did you hear that?

I was sent a build sheet for a Cutwater that was ordered, motor option was for Volvo D3,

I know from a discussion with the factory that they dropped Cummins because Yanmar underbid them by $5K for their engine/tranny combo and Cummins refused to compete with that... That so far has cost Cummins well over 100 engine sales...
I have no facts on this Volvo Penta deal... The Volvo Penta IPS has a good name in the big yacht circles and has garnered a significant chunk of new boat builds...
I have a love/hate relationship with Cummins... I like their engines generally... I got screwed by them on the no-start ECM repair that cost me over 2 grand even though the boat was on Ranger's approved for replacement list...

We are going to begin offering Volvo as an option on our Cutwater Boats starting in January of 2012. The Volvo D3 170 HP will be offered in the C26 and the Volvo D4 260 HP will be offered in the 28. Volvo is a leader in the industry and has worked very hard to earn some of our business. We are excited about this partnership. We will also be able to hold our current Cutwater pricing for boats being built with Volvo engines after the first of the year. Yanmar powered boats built after the first of the year will be facing a price increase. We will continue to offer Yanmar as the exclusive power in our Ranger Tugs for the foreseeable future.
