Just FYI for posterity if someone runs into this. Got to the boat and found rapid beep beep beep from the helm. Couldn’t tell why, but it turned off and stayed off after cycling the 12v house power.

I eventually found the warnings list screen on Garmin and saw that it was someone’s AIS SART test (search and rescue transponder) from a few days ago. Unlike an actual SART message there’s not much reason to be bothered by someone else’s test (or to bother neighbors for days if they are able to hear it). My guess is it was from a cruise ship nearby.

But the Garmin manual has the wrong instructions to disable the test alarms, as of some version of software update. The 7612 manual says to go: Home - Settings - AIS and then turn it off.

But on our system there is no AIS screen under Settings. Instead, these are at Home - Settings - Other Vessels. Then there are three options for test alerts for AIS. Turning these off won’t (I assume) block receipt of actual alerts. YMMV depending on Garmin update status; it might be correct as in the manual, or at this different menu location.

Happy boating!
