I bought my R29 from another person and it came with keys that I have no clue what they are for. Here is one of them hoping someone recognizes it and can tell me its use.

Good Morning, Karll,

I am assuming that you have a "Classic" R-29. That key is for the lock on the outside of your helm door.

Have a great day!

Yes- that fits the sliding helm door on 29 classic. My 31 is the same.

Dont loose it or leave it at home thinking you'' never need it. I found out by accident that if you slide the helm door open to the first stop the door is still a couple inches from being as open as the door frame. If you push down again on the inside latch it opens the extra couple of inches. That was all I needed when navigating locks allowing my portly girth better access. The problem, I found, was the only way to unlatch the door from this wider opening was to use the key from the outside. Maybe there is another way but it had me stumped until I tried the key in the outside lock. Also I have no idea if you can replace that key if you loose it.

Cheers, Leon

Didn't know that. I could really use an extra couple of inches getting in and out through that door. Thanks for the info!

I have two on the boat.

This probably should be a separate post instead of jumping on the key question. However, since we have some pilothouse door Ranger owners who have commented I'm curious if anyone has come up with a shortened throttle lever for their Yanmar. I am also challenged trying to slither in the door, especially when powering and the throttle is forward of neutral. Too many instances of my gut or butt pushing the throttle forward startling passengers - or worse.

It’s easy to do I had a person on my boat bump it into reverse at the dock, luckily I caught it right away. I go out the door occasionally but like it for reaching out and dropping a fender or throwing the line to the dock.

Yes, you can get replacements to the helm sliding door key. We got key blanks from Richard @ Ranger Tugs Parts, and we found a locksmith in a shop in Bremerton who was able to cut a couple of spare keys for us. They work great!!! The keys are special, since the have 4 sides to them, but the locksmith was able to copy each side, one side at a time. There is no stop on the key, so the locksmith needs to be careful of where the cuts start.
