Earlier today, I posted question about maintenance on my Volvo D4-300 (involving the thermostat). Some of you may have read that post. But for those who didn't, I thought I would separately post something that may be of broader interest to those with Volvo engines.
In the course of checking some info for my earlier post, I went to Volvo's website and reprinted the service protocol for my engine. Later, while writing that post, I discovered that Volvo had added something that previously had not been on the list -- a spec to overhaul the sea water pump at 48 months or 2000 hrs. This is the second time I have discovered a change to the service protocol on the D4-300 in my boat.
When I saw that change, I decided to download a new copy of the Service and Maintenance Manual. Turns out that some of that has changed too. There are some new sections (like one that advises that the sea pump overhaul must be done by a dealer). And I caught at least one change to a prior spec for changing the drive belt. I just happened to notice that the newer manual I download specifies that drive belt tensioner should be torqued to 80 Nm and the bolts that hold the tensioner should be tightened to 60 Nm. The manual that I've been using (dated 3-2019 and downloaded shortly after getting our boat) specifies 70 Nm and 48 Nm, respectively.
So evidently, service protocols get updated and changed from time to time, something I didn't really expect. And the procedures and specs in the service and maintenance manuals sometimes get modified (and new sections added) as well.
If you want to keep that info updated for your Volvo engine, you can do that via Volvo's website. You need your engine's serial number. After you enter it, you will get a list of various documents you can download in PDF form, including the latest service protocol, Operator's Manual, and Service and Replacement Manual and sometimes some special bulletins. Here's the link:
