Upgrading a Garmin unit

Looking to see if anyone has upgraded the Garmin unit & if so how did it go.

I have a 2012 29s w/ a Garmin 5215. I just purchase a 8616 at the Chicago boat show & will attempt to install it in a couple of weeks down in Florida. I was told that most of the wiring should match up. Screen should not be a problem, I just may need a small filler piece on the bottom.

pretty sure I saw a thread on here of someone doing that upgrade.

I have considered it a number of times. the conclusion I came to as the new unit is smaller than the old unit is to mount a new piece of material like black starboard over the old hole and install the unit into that. Getting a filler to look right seems might difficult.

I'm keen to understand what happens with your GSD22 in this upgrade as the new unit doesnt need this thing.

will you still use the GSD22 or run a new cable from plotter to depth sounder and leave the gsd22 in place?
