Hi Team,

I’ve recently had my 2010 R29 on the hard getting a bit of work done on her. Unfortunately some of the yard guys have left several cans of chemicals on my dinette, burning rings (teak Olympic Rings) into the finish and requiring it to be sanded back and re-finished.

I see on this forum that it is a urethane finish on the teak dinette table, but I want to know what type/brand/spec was used so we can try to match it up. Any other tips such as recommended sandpaper grade, how many coats and other such info would be helpful as we work to rectify the damage.

Many thanks in advance.
Scott

My 2012 R27 has a satin or matte varnish finish - not glossy. Everything else in the tug has a teak oil finish.

Hey Scott,

knotflying is correct. We use the Minwax Helmsman satin finish. You can of course do a different sheen if you wish, since you will most likely want to refinish the whole top anyway. It's your choice. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Ralf

Thank you for the insight guys.
I’ve found the product mentioned: https://www.minwax.com/wood-products/cl ... r-urethane

Is it the can, or the spray bottle that the factory uses? And any tips on number of coats? I intend to sand the whole table surface back with 1000 grit sand paper and would like to bring it back to as good as new.

Many thanks again.
Scott

Brush will work. You can probably use a foam roller, but check that it is compatible with the product. You may have to be a bit more aggressive than 1,000 grit to remove the stains. You can go much courser and then end up with maybe 320. After the first coat then use the much finer grit.

A friend's dog chewed a bit of my R31 dinette table and the Minwax that Ranger Tugs recommended worked perfectly with wood filter on the corner.

Apparently Helmsman Minwax urethane comes in an oil/alkyd version and a water based version. The labelling on the products doesn't seem real clear, except that the oil version suggests mineral spirits for cleanup, while the water based version recommends soap and water cleanup. We don't want to use the wrong one. Can anyone tell me exactly which product was used on a 2016 R29 galley dinette tabletop?

Go with the oil based. My experience with other water based clear finishes are they are not as durable and get white from moisture.

Water based urethane? Seems like an oxymoron to me...
