Any one have experience using a slow cooker while under way? Research indicates a slow cooker pulls quite a bit from the batteries during the length of the cooking cycle, so using one while not attached to shore power looks like a bad idea. But with the engine (200 hp outboard in my case) running while under way and charging the house batteries, I am wondering if that would work. Any one tried this?

Yes, we keep a small cooker in the "cave" and use it underway, plenty of power with the Volvo 200hp running on our 2013 R27 Classic. Two considerations: 1) ours is small enough to fit in the sink while underway so it is stable; 2) make sure the faucet cannot inadvertently get pushed on.

Particularly for shoulder season cruising (colder weather, shorter days), this is a nice alternative for meal prep and does not strain the batteries.

Great to hear your reply and thanks for the info. We are heading on a cruise up the east side of Vancouver Island to Desolation Sound next week and the slow cooker is now part of my meal planning. Yes, the slow cooker we have fits nicely in the sink and thanks for the faucet warning.

We use slow cooker in sink frequently on our 2014 R25SC. We wait until underway to turn on inverter -- no chance of pulling from battery alone. "Slow Cooking for Two," Mendocino Press, Berkeley is very good set of recipes. White chicken chili is a favorite. Be sure to turn inverter off when reaching marina, again to protect batteries. Our slow cooker is not digital, doesn't know what time it is, doesn't care. It has low or high heat and that is all it does -- but it does it very well.

My wife and I use a small 12v slow cooker on our C-dory. It is one built for use by truckers and we bought it at a truck stop. Just plugs into a cigarette lighter outlet and it works great. Nothing like smelling food cooking while underway on a cloudy and/or rainy day! Our only difficulty is we can't keep it in the small galley area while underway so we slide it under our v-berth area. I only stepped on it once and won't do that again. Chili belongs in your stomach and not in your shoes and all over the floor.... Anyway, we love the slow cooker and have had no problem whatsoever using it while underway. Our boat is powered by a 150 hp Honda outboard and the alternator seems to handle the battery drain just fine. I have minimal electrical knowledge but I would think the diesel in an RT would also handle the cooker power drain.

Have used the slow cooker on our 2011 R29 underway works great... as well our Dodge Ram came with a 110 volt plug and it will also power the slow cooker when we are towing the boat. Both make for an enjoyable drive and great satisfaction once parked 🙂
