Hello all, we have a Cutwater 30 sedan and would like to start taking our kayaks with us on longer cruises, but I've noticed the factory rack flexes just from the weight of the solar panel. Does anyone know the load rating of the roof rack? I am a bit nervous about putting 80 lbs of kayaks and gear on the rack without adding some additional support or installing a heavier system (like a Yakima or Thule). I see alot of pictures of boats on this blog with kayaks on them and would be interested to hear if folks are using the rack as is or modifying them before adding the weight. I also read that another tugnut experienced leaks through the roof at the point of connection making me more nervous about throwing weight on it given the span and how much it flexes empty.

Casting shadows onto the solar panel will geometrically diminish its output. Just FYI.

Yep - understood that to be an issue. Thanks Kip.

lots of people have kayaks and in fact car roof top boxes up there loaded with gear. Heck I saw a cutwater in Roche last weekend that had basically the kitchen sink on the roof - so many toys!

The original owner of my boat added diagonal braces where the hoops attach to the SS handrail. They are about 6 inches long to make the hoops more stable. They do not wobble forward and aft with the braces added. He did this with 45 degree brackets and a short piece of SS tube. That would be times 4 of course. I have no idea of cost, I'm guessing not cheap, they look well done. He also had clamps for skis' in the middle of the hoop that he used for the Kayak paddles. Pretty slick solution for the paddles.

I would like to put a kayak up on my roof but I can't imagine lifting it. Are people using a lift of some sort? Is there a trick?

Goodluck, Leon
