Hi all,

Have any of you had moisture issues in the berth, under the mattress?

I am setting up things on Cascadia and am curious about the proverbial moisture issues in the v berth. With the wonderful Webasto heater and the coverings on the walls and ceiling I thought I might ask. I have spoken with other women who go on extended trips to Alaska on trawlers as well as liveaboards and quite a few say it is inevitable...

I have seen hypervent and wonder if any folks use that and if so what do you think about it?

I am currently in Anacortes and the precip here the past 4 days has been lower than Seattle for sure, so perhaps this is a better climate to liveaboard 🙂

Any and all comments about moisture control are welcome!

Thanks,

Anne

We bought hypervent and installed between our stateroom bed foundation and mattress and in the three years we used it we never had any issues. We spent a summer in the hot and humid Chesapeake Bay and if we would have had any problems it would have been their. If you don't have it I'd recommend it for peace of mind from the surprise growth of mold and to keep moisture at bay.

Anne: We've not seen this issue so far, and we've had our R25 since Aug 2009. Our R25 is docked in a covered slip at Edmonds and I always leave a dehumidifier running in the boat while docked in the slip.

So far I've not seen any evidence of mold, moisture issues or bad nasty smells on board with using this device.

Here is the device I use... and I only paid $27 for this in 2009... it's now close to $73...

We used Hypervent in our 22 C-Dory and had no condensation under the mattress. However, due to the V-berth walls and ceiling being unlined, we still had condensation in those locations.

We have spent two nights in out new 25 SC here in Washington state and did not experience condensation.

NOTE: We found that cracking open the v-berth hatch about an inch AND keeping a small fan running in the aisle, certainly helped reduce condensation in both boats.

Hope this helps!
