vhf radio starts emitting a loud high pitch squeal

Hello

This might seem trivial but my vhf radio from time to time starts squealing a loud high pitched squeal.

Why is this happening?

Could it be you haven't programed a MMSI number into it yet. Mine made sound every once and a while until I programed it in. The MMSI number identifies your boat in the event you send an auto distress signal.
 
That is it.
I never did plug in that number.
Now I have to find out what the number actually is.

You need to apply for an MMSI.
Two sources - internationally recognized and USA recognized.
I won't bore you with my usual long winded diatribe as the information is available online :mrgreen:
