Hi everyone, looking for some collective wisdom.

boat was serviced at 348hrs by previous owner/ bellingham yachts. I'm now at 400 hours and understand I should be doing a 400 hour service

(volvo d4 -260 on a cutwater 28)

I understand that coastal marine has lost the volvo certified mechanic status for seattle and the factory suggested pacific power.

i just called and they seemed very nice on the phone.

Anyone have experiences with pacific power?
is about $1200 typical for a 400 hour service?

much appreciate any insights.
Gavin

Greetings Gavin,

That would really depend on what was done at 348 hrs and how long ago.

If the complete 200 hr service was completed at the C28’s last service, then the only remaining items to be completed for the 400 hr are the anodes and inspection of belts, hoses, and engine / transmission paint condition. $1200 for these – no.

However, if 12 months or more have passed since the last 200 hr service, then both the 200 and 400 criteria would apply. $1200 for these – likely.

Don't have any experience with Pacific Power.

Thanks Cessna - much appreciated!

It was 12 months ago for the 348hr service. so as its been a year since then and as it's the first major service on the boat, frankly I just want to have them check everything.

When I purchased my 2008 R25 from the factory they sent me to Tanglewild Marine in Olympia. Tanglewild put on a new turbo and mixing elbow and changed all the belts/fluids/filters/zinks. Fair prices, great workmanship. Don't know if they work on Volvo's, I have the Cummins.

Hello,

Coastal Marine Engine is still a full Gas/Diesel Volvo Penta dealer. We have the latest Vodia 5 diagnostic tools and our technicians are still up to date with available training on the entire Volvo Penta lineup. If you have any questions regarding Coastal Marine Engine please feel free to contact me at anytime.

Thanks,

I recently had my C28 50 hr.service. Jacobson's Marine in Edmonds has a certified Volvo mechanic(Doug) who was previously with Coastal in Seattle. Seemed extremely competent and thorough. Fairly expensive at $780. Crankcase filter at $125 runs up the bill.

Any idea why the Crank Case Filter was changed? It is not part of the 50 hour service on the C28. It's listed for a scheduled replacement at the 200 hour service.

Thanks

Jacobson's Marine in Edmonds no longer services inboard/stern drive boats. The certified Volvo mechanic no longer works there. Does anybody have any experience with Bayside Marine in Everett?

Last fall I had Coastal Marine do the 100 hour service on my 2015 Cutwater 28 in the water at Shilshole marina. I provided all parts except for transmission fluid and the bill came to $555 which included travel time to the marina from their shop near Ballard. I was impressed with the mechanic that they sent out. I had changed all the zincs outside the boat when I had it hauled out at Port of Edmonds earlier.

Hi Cessna172,

You are right the Volvo Penta owners manual does show the crankcase filter needing to be changed during the 200hour service. However, typically shops will change them once they see oil about 1/2 to 3/4th of the way up the filter. If the filter gets completely saturated with oil, your engine will push that oil back through the air filter and burn it.

I had a mechanic from Pacific Power (Barry) do my 400 hour service. Barry was excellent. super knowledgeable and competent. despite a stuck nut on the transmissions fluid reservoir everything went well. Would recommend.
he was there for close to 6 hours so i can see why the bill is as much.

For those of you up the North side of Seattle, might be worth asking Bellingham Yachts (the tug and cutwater dealer) to quote as they will travel to service as well

Can those filters be cleaned?

I discovered that Bayside Marine at Everett Marina does not service inboards. But they recommended Performance Marine in Everett. I checked with them and they service Volvo Penta inboards both at Everett marina and at Dagmars. Does anyone have any experience with Performance Marine?

Kip;

We have tried to clean those filters with different solvents in the past, after each cleaning they began to fall apart. What we saw during attempted cleaning was the thin filter would tear and come unglued from the plastic skeleton. Fortunately as the piston rings begin to seat, you shouldn't need to replace the filter more than once every 100-200hrs.

Thanks for the input on cleaning the filters. Nice to piggy back on someone else's experience so as not to have to reinvent the wheel.
