Today's mail included a notice from Volvo Penta of Service Campaign T0025, which is a software update to correct engine smoking at startup. Has anybody here had this done yet, and did it make a difference. I ask because the embarrassing cloud of diesel exhaust smoke that my R27 generates from cool-weather starts has made me reluctant to use the boat as much as I could have since last summer.

Interesting to hear that this issue is now termed a recall. There has been a software update available for some time for D3 start up smoke though it has never been identified as a recall as far as I know until now.

Here is a previous thread on this subject.

Our D3-200 used to smoke pretty bad on startup to the point we would ask any guests to go in the cabin and close the door until the smoke cleared. After becoming aware of the software update described in the link above we took our boat to the Volvo Penta service center in LaConner and had the SW update installed. Huge difference! Now we get very little smoke on startup if any. I highly recommend the SW update if you have smoke issues.

CAPTCRUNCH,

I noticed you are in Annapolis. Seven Seas in Kent Narrows did the software update for me at the end of 2016. It has made a big difference in the smoke on startup. I may contact Volvo Penta and try and get some $$ back since they are now considering it a recall,it cost me an hour of the mechanics time.

We had a update done 9/16.The update was for a new Fob replacement. The technician updated programming and when I started the engine the cold start smoking was reduced considerably.I asked him if the update had changed fuel perimeters at start up to reduce smoke. He said when an update is required Volvo doesn't disclose all the changes. The cold start smoking was gone after that.

I should clarify that the term "recall" is mine, not Volvo Penta's, whose letter calls it a "service campaign." I'm puzzled why, if this is indeed the same software update that some here received in 2015, it took almost three years for VP to tell me about it. If I'm the only one here who gets/got the notice, I'll have to assume my engine and I are just special. Don't know if I'm one of the first or one of the last to be told.

CAPTCRUNCH,

You just burst my bubble. Not a recall, I guess I will not get my money back. Looks like you will be paying also if you want to eliminate the smoke.

As I indicated before Seven Seas are the folks that can reprogramme you engine. They work with the RT dealer Pocket Yacht to service Volvo Penta. Dave Schaake is the tech that did mine his phone is 410-827-4040. I would combine the reprogramming with other work since they charge to travel to your location. I believe it took 1 hour and they charged $115/hr.

Rubbing salt in the wound, I will share that the notice says the work will be done at no charge to me.
