Volvo D4 Speed indication missing

Hello, still getting used to my 2019 C28 with the D4-260 Volvo. The square engine display has a space for speed. It is showing -.- regardless of speed and that is blanking my mpg display on the chart plotter. Anyone know how to trouble shoot this problem?

Are any engine functions showing up on the Chart plotter? Is your auto pilot working ? Can you control the fusion radio from the chart plotter? I'm asking these questions to see if you have power to the N2K back bone. If no to all you need to find the power supply to backbone. If yes to all then check the connection between the Volvo NEMA2000 Gateway interface and the backbone.

If the start panel is off there will be no communication between the Volvo engine EVC and the Garmin. The fuel and GPH will blink on the Garmin display and the speed will be blank on the EVC display. If the start panel is on The information should be available on the Garmin and EVC because they are communicating.

If you find no power at the Back bone it may be powered thru the Fusion radio. The fusion Radio may need to be reset Hold power Button for 10 seconds to reset the radio. After it resets go into settings and turn the NXR on. This is the power source (not a good power source) that Cutwater uses sometimes for powering the N2K backbone.

Thanks Brian. I went to the boat to test out your recommendations, and wouldn't you know it everything worked fine. Maybe I have a loose connection at the panel. I'll wait until it goes out again and then wiggle some wires. Thanks for your help.

actually i dont use speed on the engine display. now im thinking about it I dont think it shows there. I only view speed on the plotter.

I have a suspicion that the NMEA data for speed from the GPS doesnt get routed correctly to the engine display

It depends on what view you use on the EVC.

There are several screens to choose from as I'm sure you know. It has been so long since I set up the screens that I use. I believe you can select what options that you view. Its been so long since I sat behind the helm. I forgot how to operate everything. Hopefully soon. Between Covid 19 and now the protesting in our area and area we keep the boat. I keep delaying our launch day. It was supposed to be today

I know what you mean Brian! My boat handling skills have gotten rusty!

At this point I rarely change the engine display. It shows rpm, temp and pressure as the primary metrics. Everything else is on the plotter.

Got some new info to pass. BLUF- turning the engine battery switch off then back on fixes the display problem.

The engine speed display comes over the NMEA 2K backbone. When the NMEA 2K network has more traffic than it can handle, it starts to suppress messages of lower priority. A friend smarter than I told me to reset the NMEA 2K by turning everything off then back on. That worked. But I found I didn't need to shut everything off to get the engine speed display back. If I turn on the engine switch and see -.- in the speed display. Turing the engine battery off, then back on seems to fix the problem.

I never heard about the over load of information and suppressing information. This could be true I don't know. I will question when was the last software update that you did? I question that only because a Garmin Technician told me many times when there are small interruptions in the communication or a loss of information.It can be caused by a Bug??? I experienced this a few years ago. I would be cruising and loose information on my 7612 almost as if it paused. If I shut the unit off it still did not respond. If I shut the engine off and then turned all battery switches to off, wait a few seconds turn battery switched on, turn chart plotter on then Start panel all information is available again. The Garmin technician advised confirm all connections are tight, there is a good power source to the backbone and update the software to the newest version. I did and the issue went away. I asked him what was causing the issue. He said that is above me that is what our engineers do, find issues, ways to correct issues.
