I'm prepping everything to do the first winterization of my C28 here soon. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good oil extractor for the Volvo D4-260 engine? I heard a story from someone about using a down the dipstick extractor and losing a section of the plastic hose in their sump because it got caught and tore off. That has me a little nervous about which one I get now.

On a side note, my generator has about 5 hours on it. Thoughts on needing to do an oil change during winterization since it was barely used?

Thanks!

I use a Topsider manual oil changer (model #5060) with good success. I believe the Mase generator manual calls for a oil/ filter change after 50 hrs or 1 month (1st time), then every 200 hr or annually, so yes, change the oil and filter ....

I use one of these on my Yanmar, https://www.amazon.com/Jabsco-17800-200 ... oil+change
I don't know how the tube could get lodged in the sump. The smaller solid plastic tube is one piece, perhaps the mishap you heard about was not one piece. Another option would be to put the larger tubing on the dip stick tube and suck it out that way.
I also agree with doing an oil change on the Genset. No sense in leaving any contaminants in the oil over the Winter.

I use the Jabsco oil change kit, but I suck the oil out through the tube provided by Volvo on the stb side of the engine. You need to buy 1/2" ID rubber hose and a 1/2" quick release fitting for the pump.

Jabsco 17850-1012 DIY Engine Oil Change System, 3.5 Gallon Capacity, 12 Volt
ITT Jabsco ParMax Replacement Parts, 1/2 in hose port kit adapter

Interesting. Over the weekend I spent some time continuing to familiarize myself with everything in the boat (an ever ongoing process). As I was looking over everything on the engine I noticed a tube with a cap on the front of it sticking out. It was near the bottom of the engine and I thought to myself "I wonder if that's an oil drain for oil changes rather than having to extract it through the dipstick..." This tube was on the same side of the engine as the dipstick, about 12" or so below the water pump. I tried looking in my owners manual and at diagrams online, but nothing seems to indicate what it actually is. Any chance that is the oil tube you are talking about?

Well, on further Google searching it appears the tube I found might be a coolant drain rather than oil.

Look for the tube with a rubber cap just aft of the air filter (I think). I will double check the location when I go to my boat this afternoon.

That would be great, thanks!

My previous boat diesel engine used 30 wt oil and had to be warmed up for the oil to be sucked out during the oil change. No problem as the boat was in the water all the time.

My R-27 is now parked in my driveway. Does the Volvo D3-200 have to be warmed up prior to pumping out the oil? If so, how do folks provide cooling water while running the engine on the trailer?

Yes, warm the oil. Take the lid off the sea strainer and run a garden hose into the bowl. You need to secure the hose a bit to make sure it stays in place but it works fine. Pull your drain plug as you will get overflow into the bilge and you get a clean bilge at the same time!

Eric,

It is right next to the crankcase filter on the stb side of the engine. Good luck.
