As a new owner - the questions are numerous

Took the boat offshore - 27 classic -

under 2800 rpm water temp was about 178 - 182
over 3000 rpm water temp was about 185 - 190
steady 3500 or higher - around 192 - I stopped it at 192 - was not sure what the actually temp should be

engine has 300 hrs

Should be around 185. I'd have the heat exchangers flushed with some barnacle buster. I wouldn't let it run above 190 for extended time until you can get her flushed.

Not too bad but a bit higher than usual. I like to see the temp stay below 190 at 3500 and preferably more like 185. I can see 196 or higher at WOT depending on how long I stay there.

Things you can do: Clean the bottom of boat, Check Raw water pickup under boat for weeds, check sea strainer for weeds, check/replace Impeller, check for weeds at transmission cooler, flush raw water system with barnacle buster or equivalent.

Hi tranmkp,

Agree with Red Raven. Those numbers are not too unusual. The predominant temp of the older Volvos was around 185 for most throttle settings, and seven degrees above that is not too unusual. Having said that, I would still recommend that you check the cooling system to ensure that there are no obstructions. Should be fine after that.

Cheers,

Ralf

The D3 installed in the Rangers and Cutwaters have a 1" thru hull. 1" hose feeding the strainer and a 1 1/4" hose going to the cooler and the Raw water pump. The required thru hull for a Volvo D3 is 1 1/4". The raw water pump requirement is what ever the size of the raw water pump inlet and outlet are that is the size through should be installed. ( or larger).
With the installation of the 1" the best you will ever see is 193F at WOT. The cooling system does not get enough water flow to operate as per Volvo's design. If the through hull was sized correctly that engine should rarely see 180 F @WOT The thermostat is @178F open If the cooling system is functioning as per design the engine should stay at this temperature at any RPM with a influence only by ambient water temperature.

I have spoken to many Ranger and Cutwater owners that have the D3 200 and 220. All have stated the best they have seen is 193F at WOT with a completely clean raw water system. The best I have seen 192F operating at WOT in Lake Michigan. Water at 55F ambient, first year I owned the boat with under 100Hrs. The boat was operated 400 of the 650 hrs in fresh water. When operated in salt water the engine was flushed any time I was tied up at a marina for the night. When in the warm waters of Florida I learned to except 199F TO 203F with a clean bottom clean raw water system. To correct the higher operating temperatures experienced with the C26 or Ranger R27 with D3 200 or 220, installing a 1 1/4 through hull with no fitting smaller that 1 1/4" leading to the engines raw water cooling system will resolve the issue.

It does require a clean cooling system to keep the engine operating properly.

To answer your question in the short version the temperatures you are experiencing are normal for a Ranger or Cutwater powered with a D3 200 or 220 hp.

In my search for a new to us boat over the summer I did not see one boat, diesel powered with 200hp + with less than 1 1/2" through hull. All boats that I sea trialed during my search I never saw temperatures above 183F at WOT (All diesel powered boats. (Volvo, Yanmar, Cummins) Most of theses boats were salt water operated boats with 1000+ hours and 15+ years of experience on the water.

If what you say is true, does the factory know about this? Does the 29 ad 31 have a 1" diameter hole? If Volvo specifies a 1 1/4 hole how does the factory justify this? Damn!!

Well, BB was right - my classic 27 had a 1” thru hull that had a 1”-11/4 step up . Hmmmmm

Anyway the yard d and I just did not like the one into three setup - engine cooling should have its own circuit

Here is what we came up with - using a scoop type pickup outside of hull

Sea trials today - 4000 rpm for 20min -
191 degrees

3800 - 3400
184 degrees

Below 3400
178 degrees

Very pleased

Interesting,…a 1” thru hull would be 1” ID…. How do you connect a 1” hose onto a 1” thru hull with an outside diameter of 1:25”?
Also, the inlet diameter to the transmission oil cooler is 1” , necessitating a 1.25 hose ID to fit.
The inlet diameter to the sea strainer is also 1” ID…. The inlet diameter to the raw water pump is 1” ID.
Even with the larger thru hull, the choke point would still be the inlet diameter to the oil cooler….so this doesn’t make sense to me. My 2013 25sc DOES NOT HAVE A 1” hose feeding the sea strainer….
The highest temperature I’ve seen is 185°…average is 178°
