I own a 2013 C28 with the D42601-F engine with 245 hours. Engine temp stays at 185 up to about 3100RPM at which point it jumps back and forth from 185 to 196. WOT is just over 3400RPM and the temp climbs to 205 and the over temp alarm sounds and the engine automatically throttles back. I have replaced the impeller which was intact but a couple of the vanes were bent in the opposite direction. I checked the thru hull intake and raw water strainer which were clean. I had the system flushed with cleaner. None of this fixed the problem. What's the next step? Can the heat exchanger tubes be removed and cleaned? Faulty thermostat?

There is a related topic:

In that topic, I posted, "He [Volvo certified mechanic] then told me to run WOT periodically to see what happened on the gauge. If it simply jumped to 195-197 then stayed there until backing off on the throttle, all was okay. If it continued to rise above 195-197 at WOT, then there is likely a problem with a water flow issue of some type - partially plugged sea strainer, or partial obstruction in the heat exchanger, etc"

Since you have replaced the impeller and checked the through hull and strainer, you likely have a heat exchanger that needs service.

Flushing the heat exchangers won't necessarily remove sea grass, etc. is my understanding. Before I pulled the heat exchangers I'd consider pulling some hoses and inspecting for vegetation.

Check your oil cooler. This seems to be the weakest link in the system. Grass and such tends to clog the intake. Remove the end cap and I bet there is junk in there.

I had the same issue. Check heat exchanger for calcium build up.

How do I clean the calcium buildup? What do you flush the engine with?

I use distilled white vinegar, only a couple bucks a gallon at stores like Costco.

We had similar symptoms to yours last summer after being serviced. Turned out that we were low on coolant. Have you burped the coolant? Just checking the overflow tank isn’t enough. Our coolant overflow was full even though we were down 3/4 of a gallon. You need to make sure the coolant is full.

I had a coolant leak a few months he ago. Fixed the leak and topped it off. Checked it this time, full to the top. Thank you.

Thank you. I’ll put in a new impeller and some vinegar.
