I have had my Volvo Penta D6 for 2 years now and learned a tremendous amount about these engines (from what I used to know, lol).

I have a good start up procedure that includes all the regular tasks, i.e. Battery levels and switches, Sea Cock, Oil level check, ext.
However, when I return to the dock after cruising and the engine is running, I tie up (<2min), and then I push the start/stop button, then turn off the Garmin and then the ignition button. I keep my boat 15 minutes into a no wake zone, so I’m not going from 3000 rpm to 0. But am going from 900rpm to 600 for a minute or to, then to 0. I feel as if I am rushing something. Like maybe the ignition needs to stay on for some reason for a couple of minutes. Does anybody know if there is something I am missing here?

What do you guys do?

Hi… yes the shut down order is important so all the data is transferred from the engine computer to the garmin.. fuel burn etc. On powering down — 1. Engine start/stop, 2. Ignition- and then wait for 15 seconds until the garmin gauges for fuel burn, mpg or whatever you have showing blink and then go to ‘——‘ 3. Garmin power off and 4. Engine battery off.

Power up in the reverse order and do not rush the system. Note: if you have a CB and plan to use the CB on the trip then make sure the CB garmin is powered up as well before you turn ignition on. If you do not and then go up there mid trip and turn the garmin on everything will go to “——“ and no data will be transferred. (I’ve done this and had to stop the boat. Power everything down and then restart the system in order above.)

I had odd issues with no rpm showing, fuel amount off etc in year one, until I researched this and have not had an issue since following this procedure. Now in year four.

Awesome info Sandro, greatly appreciated!
