Our Wallas stove starts just fine with the lid down in the heater mode, but doesn't start with the lid open in the stove mode. We can use the stove by starting as a heater and then opening the lid for use as a stove. have not been able to solve this. any suggestions are much appreciated - the Wallas dealer at the boat show had no answers other than it might be a faulty stove and that we could remove it and bring it into the dealer for evaluation, a bit of a hassle.

Had the same problem and it turned out to be corrosion in the plug that plus the lid to the base located ontop left hand corner.
Thanks pat

Corrosion sounds like it could be the problem. When our Wallas didn't work we found how to reset the entire system by following a process that unplugged specific wires on the back. This might help you by reset some of the "settings".

Ours does exactly the same thing.

I tried to start the Wallis with the lid open several times until the stove finally errored out. I had to disconnect the power lead at the battery to reset the stove and then I tried again...with the same result. I thought to start the stove with the lid closed and it has worked each and every time that way. Once the stove is going properly you can open the lid and use it as a cook top without any problems. BTW, this was the first time we tried to use the stove with the lid open and about the second time we ever had fired it up. It seems unlikely there was any corrosion on a brand new stove, in a brand new boat, at the end of summer. (when this all happened)

I assumed this was a safety feature although I couldn't find a thing in the manual. But now, maybe Andrew or someone could shine some light.

Our stove is also quite new (boat was delivered June 30 2011 so it is a 2012 model) and it has been doing this since about day 1. So, corrosion should not be an issue for us, either. We plan to spend five or six days on the boat later in March and will see if any of these suggestions work. Hate having to turn on the heater every time we want to use the stove.

We took possession of our boat and therefore the Wallis within a day or so of yours. Interesting!

I have never experienced this issue on any of the wallas stoves. Mike at Scan Marine is the guy who would know of the issue who can be contacted at 206-285-3675. I actually didn't think the stove was supposed to start when the lid was open. I also thought shut down you were supposed to have the lid closed. Let me know what Mike says when you are able to reach him to explain the issue. Sorry I couldnt be of more help!

Be very careful when bringing your stove in for service or repair. Back here in the northeast we have one aurhorized factory dealer located in Jamestown, R.I. I brought my unit to them in December for service as it was smoking upon startup. Without checking with me they sent the unit out to Scan Marine who supposedly changed out a electric board and serviced the unit. Upon return the aluminum protective cage covering the guts was all banged up. The cost of the service was $ 550 which included shipping. No repair invoice was furnished describing the work done nor what parts were replaced or their cost. I would not recommend Wallas, Scan Marine or the dealer in R.I. to anyone.

Just for reference sake - on our former R-25 we always started the Wallas with the lid up. Aside from a few resets (as described in the manual) we didn't have any issues. Typically, we would close the lid when we were done cooking, and then turn the unit off. The fan would run and force warm air out across the galley counter until it cooled sufficiently and the unit shut down automatically. Sometimes, after cooking, we'd shut it off with the lid up. When the pans were cool and ready for clean-up, we'd shut the lid.

When it was cold enough that we wanted to run it as a heater we'd start it with the lid up, or leave the unit on after cooking, then put the lid down and run it as a forced air heater. When it was time to shut it down, we did so with the lid down. We never started the unit with the lid down, however.

The only problem we had with the unit was after we ran through some lumpy seas (it wasn't on) and the fan kicked out of its mounting slots and, unknown to us, a fitting fell off. This resulted in a misalignment and a metal-on-metal grinding noise whenever the fan came on. Someone from Scan Marine, at the Seattle Boat Show, helped us diagnose the problem. We found the fitting, replaced it, and it worked fine from then on.

To anyone experiencing an issue with a Wallas product, please call toll free 1-888-606-6665 M-F 9-5 PDT, or e-mail service@scanmarineusa.com. We will do everuthing possible to get you up and running again as efficiently as possible.

It is especially valuable to get a phone call during working hours when you are at the device and can start and run it for us. This allows us to do "live" analysis of what is happening.

If you have had work done and have an issue you would like to discuss or have explained, we are here for that as well.

Thank you for using Wallas products!

Thanks, Doug. We will keep these numbers handy for our next trip on the boat, hopefully the last week of March, depending on the weather. we will have the chance then to do some troubleshooting with our stove.
