WATER, HOT and COLD

I am the proud new, last week, owner of ESCAPE, Ranger Tug 25 hull #21, berthed at my home in Naples Fl. Previously sailed a Corsair F 27 for 20 years. Went from a FERRARI on water, to " YOUR FATHERS OLDSMOBILE ". I have lots of learning to do regarding the many " systems " on the vessal. First question : I filled the water tank, but I am not getting any from the galley sink, shower or lavatory. I hear the pump operating under my feet at the helm station, but no water, hot or cold. I understand, maybe incorrectly, that the pump pressurizes the tank and lines. Maybe I have a leak ? How do I access the pump /

We had a similar problem when we first got our R25. Once primed the pump would maintain its prime but it was impossible to get it primed if the water was low. Turns out that the water pump was bad. It is my understanding that there are repair kits for the pump but we installed a new pump. In addition, when I took the pump out I found that the pump was clogged with plastic shavings from when the holes were drilled in the tank to install the pipes. You might start out by checking to see if the pump is plugged up.

The pump is under the deck where your feet are when you stand at the helm. You get at it by removing the heater vent with heater unit (it is ultimately connected to the engine). You do not have to disconnect the heater. If you disconnect the heater hoses be prepared to get antifreeze everywhere. Remove four screws from the vent cover and and pull it out and away and you should be able to see the water pump behind it, attached to the 'ceiling', with a good flash light. I had to wiggle it a bit to get the vent/heater out.

No water with pump noise means a bad pump, disconnected hose, no/low water or blocked vent. You are sure you put water in the water tank...yes 😉 Maybe it was winterized (since you are in FL probably not) and the hoses have been disconnected somewhere. Could be the vent is clogged? It is the forward vent on the starboard side on my boat.


The pump does not pressurize the tank. It pumps water from the tank to pressurize the water lines...

You may just need to prime the pump. An easy way is to hook a shop vac to a tap nozzle I have a mini shop vac and the smaller hose and was able to jamb it onto the nozzle make sure all taps are off except the one you are using and draw the water through the system . You will hear the pump load up once it gets water in the impellar...This has worked for me in the past. Also until you get water be careful not to turn your Hot water tank on or you will burn out the element

Can you see the water tank and determine if the tank is indeed full? Have you checked all the water lines to see if they are connected? Is the drain plug for the water heater installed.

The water pump does not pressurize the tank. It takes water from the tank and pressurizes the waterlines. If there is no water in the tank, the pump will run forever. If there is water in the tank and no water in the lines, it will run a long time and then turn on and off until the air is bled from the lines. If the water heater was drained and the drain plug reinstalled, then it will take a long time to fill the water heater and the hot water lines. It is best to bleed the air from the lines one faucet at a time. Start at the faucet furthest from the water pump and work closer (just like bleeding the brakes on your car).

There are some other discussions where some of the older boats had problems with the water lines leaking. You might need to check all your water lines for leaks. The water pump may have a screen filter at it's intake that could be clogged. I have only had two water pumps fail in all my campers and boats. In both cases, they just failed to work. Before you go to the trouble to look at the pump or tank. If you have water pressure in bathroom check your kitchen sink fauset strainer. It is easyly removed and cleaned. There is a history of these clogging with the fine powder residue from when the water tank was originally drilled during plumbing installation. The kitchen fauset tends to catch ass this "white stuff". However, if your bath fixtures alos had no water pressure then it could be either the pump or a pinched hose.

Found and fixed the problem. The 1/2" nylon 90 degree ell, screwed into the " city water" fitting was nearly fractured completely, and leaking. Had to cut out the back of the cabinet under the galley sink. Replaced the JABSCO part and all is now well. THANK YOU ALL.
