What experience is there with water in your diesel fuel ? I (touch wood) have not seen any water in my fuel for as long as I can remember. Is it there; does it simply pass through ? I know that today's fuel is today cleaner.

Water can form in the fuel via condensation. This is usually not a big issue since the bowl at the bottom of the filter will catch that. You may get an alarm of water in fuel and then draining the bowl usually solves the problem. I use a product called FPPF Diesel Fuel Treatment. One ounce for every 10 Gallons of fuel. It disperses water and helps keep injectors clean etc. The bigger issue could be bad fuel with lots of water in it. This requires removing the fuel and having a process done called polishing. I usually make sure that I go to fuel facilities that have a lot of traffic with a large turnover of fuel to avoid this issue.
There are different theories, but I recommend on long layovers or a boat not used frequently keeping the tank full.
