For a couple of months of winter layup in the water, we have removed the Sunbrella cockpit cover to give the cover a break from possible UV damage.

Yesterday we had strong winds and rain from the West (the direction our stern faces in the slip) and today I discovered some pooling water in the cabin. In the absence of the cockpit cover, the rain seems to have made its way into the boat around the edges of the door frame.

I am wondering whether this is a common problem with a 2024 R27 or whether our door may have been hung improperly. I do know that to lock the door, you have to push on the frame to turn the key, suggesting to me that the door does not sit properly in its frame.

I have to push a little bit on the door to lock it, but that's because of the fairly thick rubber gasket. I have no leaks and my boat is 12 years old. You are sure it's the door and not something else?

I suppose you could test this with a garden hose.

We removed our R27 2019 Cockpit Cover for cleaning/repair and found water inside the cabin after washing the that area down with a hose. Closer inspection determined that when spaying and washing above the door it leaks. The issue is the seal on top of the door even when it seems tight it still can leak. We added a bit more seal and that solved the issue. However, since the cabin wall slants in, water collects at the top of the door. I was in the process to install a u channel above the door to drain rain water or even washing down the area above the cabin door to prevent leaks but sold the boat.

Just to rule out inconvenient and coincidental timing: early on I thought we had a big water leak problem with the door seal due to a ton of water coming showing up in the cabin after some water rushed into the cockpit area. Turns out it was from the refrigerator not being cold enough so the freezer had thawed, melting into the tray underneath it where it then poured out of the fridge after hitting a large wave, coinciding with water rushing into the cockpit.

Just to rule out other random stuff that goes along with winter maintenance...

Thanks for your reply, Martin. Early last summer I did use a hose to spray the aft cockpit bulkhead for cleaning and, yes, indeed, ended up with water in the cabin. I called our broker/salesman and he said the door is not designed to withstand strong hose washing. In subsequent washings, I was more gentle with the hose. In this case, it appears the water was due to strong wind-driven rain, and without the canvas top in place, the rain got in around the top seal on the door.

Thanks for the suggestion, Stargazer. But in this case the fridge has been off for a month and there was no melting ice involved.

Thanks for your reply. Could you say a bit more about the extra gasket seal you used on the top of the door. If you have a link to the product you used, that would be really helpful. Thanks!

Been a while so do not remember which seal. I would call the guys over at Ranger tug and they can give you that info. Kenny Marrs helped us out on the issue.
