What are the tools you all use to open the water strainer? On my R-31 it’s a square peg hole (about 5/8” on a side square) with two pins sticking up. It looks like it’s inviting a special tool. Or maybe there’s some kind of adapter for a larger wrench?

Is this the main sea strainer that goes to the engine cooling? If so, there should be two big tabs at 180 from one another about 3-4" apart. Grab and twist those counterclockwise (use a screwdriver etc between them if needed). Or are you asking about the raw water wash down and head supply strainer?

I mean the raw water strainer on the engine. Your suggestion (putting something between those tabs as a lever) makes total sense and I feel like an idiot. I was looking for some tool that went in the square peg or over the top.

Cool, and it does look like some large and fancy square head tool could be used ... but it is a rare case on the boat where it's not required, LOL. Glad that helped!
