PO left me single cushion, fabric covering identical to V-berth seating/bed, back side is black fabric adorned with velcro - no obvious attachment point in V-berth. Shape is trapezoid with tab off narrower top, about 18" square, something like this:

{fail - tried to draw it in ASCII but the board spacing is different}
"A truncated 18" square capital "A" with a tab off the truncated top"

Anyone know where it fits?

Just a guess here since I’m not familiar with the Cutwater line, but on my 2012 R27, an odd shaped cushion like you mention exactly fits the galley tabletop when it is lowered to form a berth between the table seats.. It is upholstered in vinyl and not in fabric that matches the cuddy cushions, but it does have the black fabric backing.

The R31 comes with a weird cushion/pillow that is supposed to be used when the galley tabletop is lowered into berth mode. The idea is that you can prop your legs up when lying back. On the forward-facing galley seats, one even secretly tilts out to make the back more like a lounger.

the 28 (which has the same interior as the 26) has two loose cushions

1. an almost rectangle cushion that goes on the main table to create a short person berth.
2. a fill in cushion for the forward cabin that converts the table into the berth and extends its length.

The cave step. Mid cabin step.

Thought I'd checked every conceivable mounting point... but you're right, of course: the thing precisely fits the top step down to the cave (mouse fur covering grabs the velcro backing). Why one needs a cushion there is beyond me but - mystery solved!
