Going to do some cruising this year. Where do you put your trash can?

We have a small, square lidded bin attached with a bungee cord hooked to the either side of the footrest below the aft/starboard window that swings out and open. Keeps it outside and easy to get to. Easy to move when raising the hatch cover. I wondered at first about curious critters but so far after four years no problems.

Don't know the lay out or space available on your boat but will give you my two cents worth!
We do a lot of backcountry camping (LNT) Leave No Trace, ie pack it in you pack it out.
With a little pre planning you can cut your garbage by up to 50%, if not more, pre plan your meals so there's little waste ie steaks with no bones (fillet mignon my favorite), pork tenderloins etc. I use grocery bags for garbage bags and then place in a three gallon bucket with a lid that seals. If you know someone with a pool the buckets that have the chlorine tablets works great and fit in my compartment at the back of my boat. By compacting beer cans, water bottles etc. Two people can go a week with only 3 gallons of garbage. It will take practice, but it's not that hard.
Just be thankfully you don't have to worry about the raccoons or skunks getting into your garbage
Good luck Bob

Thanks gents. Very helpful

We use a small CaddyCan for the interior trash and a large one for recylables which we hook onto the area above the cockpit fridge. I have photos in our album. This is not the lowest cost solution but it works very well for us. We have a large dog who is always interested in garbage so this system works well for that.

Adding to what Bob said, managing trash when cruising is easier when there is less to handle. When provisioning try to eliminate as much packaging as possible before you get on the boat. Put food items in reusable containers. Favor crushable cans over glass and plastic. We also use a 1.5L SimpleHuman countertop trash can in the galley, with compostable pet waste bags, for easy collection of wet/compostable trash. We store them until we can access compost receptacles.

Cheers,

Bruce
