Where to put garbage in R-31?

Where have other R-31 owners stowed their garbage? Looking for a convenient place or tips and tricks in the galley / salon. My last boat had a clear “garbage can” but I can’t find one on the R-31. Thanks!

We just secure a plastic grocery bag on to the handle of our dinette seat on our 29s. When at marina change every two days on hook about the same but store in an outside compartment.

Good trash management will help! Prior planning to eliminate and not bring on board is a good starting point. Some tips, no cardboard packaging, put it in a zip-lock and get rid of the box that's only halfway full anyway. Plan meals prior to leaving and prep so there is no waste (bag salad, meat with no bones, try not to over preparer only cook what will be consumed. Some very good info on the internet under leave no trace, waste management on boats and others. Two people should be able to go for a week and only generate a 5 gal bucket of waste. We have two of these https://www.amazon.com/simplehuman-Gallon-Countertop-Brushed-Stainless/dp/B0016L4ELI, one for galley and one for the head. They fit well and encourage conservation as Bob notes. Just get the right size bags. When those fill, we tie them off and store in a larger bag (also tied off) in the cockpit or galley if needed.

We also have one of those cockpit mounting trash things -- but have not yet even unpacked it in almost 1.5 years because minimizing and using the small bins has worked well (and I worry about raccoons in the cockpit!)

Thanks all. I am a long-time cruising sailor and former liveaboard, so I know the value of keeping trash down (though my two co-owners are still learning...). My question was more about where, specific to the R-31, than about how to keep it down 🙂

We screwed a rectangular trash can to the inside of one of our galley cabinet doors. When you open the door, the trash can swings out with it. Placing a spacer between the can and the door before screwing it on allows a plastic bag to be draped over the rim of the can.

We have a large trash can that has an auto open that we keep at the bottom step to the mid berth. This is easy to reach from the galley and if we have people sleeping with us in the mid berth at night we move it out to the cockpit as the lid can be locked.

We put two hooks above cabinets in front of sink. Use grocery bags. Another hanging from soap dish in shower.

With the waterproof liner, In blue of course. So far, works well hung off the dining table rail. Wife isn’t thrilled with the location (in her worldview, trash should alway be hidden). However, it’s super handy for the galley and it holds enough for daily use or two. Works with liners or plastic grocery bags.

We have a small plastic can that holds a small grocery size bag. I put it under the table when we are cruising and then put it on the step up to the passenger seat when we are tied up. It's easy and out of the way.

My boat is different, an R23, but I found at a discount store (probably Family Dollar) a small bathroom-size lidded step-on trash can which I Velcro strapped to abut against the pedestal under the dinette table. (The strap goes all around the can and pedestal.) Instead of using the step-on to open it, I affixed a metal coat hook to the top to assist in opening the lid. For recyclables we use an oval Sterlite plastic pitcher kept on the galley counter, and when full transfer them to an empty ice bag and keep in a cockpit locker til we come across a recycle bin. A silicone “zipper” bag for the thin plastic that we have to hold on to til we find a place that accepts it, or we it take back home when we trailer to “orange bag” it, a service offered by our home garbage collector. These everyday boat things are like little puzzles to solve....

We saved the plastic disposable shopping bags we get with our groceries. We hang one by looping it through the round support arm under the salon table. It doesn't get in the way and if you flatten your soda cans before you put them in, it holds about a days trash.When full we tie it off and put in the cockpit or lazzeretti and put a new bag up.

Same here. I can fit 5 PFDs, flare kit, first aid kit, and a medium trash can in that space.

I too used the wine cooler's space but created a pull out drawer for the bin. We then store the filled the trash bags in the propane locker until we hit port.
